About the Festival
A vision born from the belief that freedom, culture, and creativity can transform the world.
Our Mission
The Global Freedom Festival is an annual celebration held in Barbados, running from April 14 to August 1 each year. It explores freedom in three interconnected movements — bringing together visual artists, musicians, scholars, activists and communities from across the African world and beyond.
Through art exhibitions, live music and three-day symposia, the festival creates space for deep intellectual exchange and cultural celebration — grounded in the liberation histories of Africa and the Caribbean.
Three Movements of Freedom
1st Movement: Leadership & Freedom
Art exhibition, Friday live band shows, and a three-day symposium (April 28–30). Closes with Labour Day, May 1.
2nd Movement: Afrikan & Caribbean Indigenous Knowledge
Art exhibition, Friday live band shows, and a three-day symposium (June 9–11). June 12 celebrates Cuffie — Barbados' early freedom fighter.
3rd Movement: Afrikan Spirituality
Art exhibition, Friday live band shows, and a three-day symposium (July 28–30). Closes August 1 — Emancipation Day.
